Under 10 Girls enjoy Cup Success
GIRLS UNDER 10s CUP FINAL
At Jockey Farm, Rusthall, SATURDAY 28th April 2007, Tunbridge Wells
Foresters Girls Under 10s 1
Eastbourne Borough Girls Under 10s 0
Tunbridge Wells Foresters had something to cheer about last weekend as their Under 10s Girls Team, in the inaugural Crowborough & District League Girls Cup Competition, swept aside Eastbourne Borough to achieve a memorable win.
In a closely fought game, Foresters eased the nerves early on with a goal in the 5th minute. From there on in no one was given an inch. The nerves were beginning to return towards the end of the second half as Eastbourne had managed to break away a couple of times, but only to find a solid goalkeeper who kept a clean sheet in majestic style.
Foresters had several chances in the first half, the best of them skimming off the crossbar just as it looked to be dipping in for a second goal. Eastbourne fought bravely and so nearly drew the game level right at the end as the ball skipped over the Forester’s goalkeeper’s head, only to be cleared off the line by a solid Right Back that saved extra time having to be played.
The girls played with such pride and their enthusiasm and attitude towards the game was rewarded at full time with a whistle that just never seemed to come!
Player of the Match could have undoubtedly been awarded to any of the team, but the performance of the season had to be credited to the goalkeeper who was standing in for the regular goalie who was unfortunately unable to play. To keep a clean sheet at this level of girl’s football is truly unbelievable.
Forty minutes of almost intolerable tension came to and end and Foresters arose triumphant. Not bad for a team that consisted of just five girls last summer. The team was bolstered in August 2006 by a successful recruitment campaign that saw an additional 11 girls join the squad.
Each player received a cup winner’s trophy and the ‘Cup’ was awarded to the Captain. It was a thoroughly deserved result, a wonderful end to a rain delayed ‘stop/start’ season and a positive step towards developing the team to further successes.
The Foresters Girls Squad, managed & coached by Mark Nicholson, Simon Howie and Steve Avis, will be looking to set up two new teams next season with the current Under 10s moving to Under 11s.
They are looking for new players in the Under 12 and Under 10/9 categories. We would like to hear from players who will be in Years 7,6,5 & 4 from September.
Foresters Girls aim to offer all teams League & Cup matches next season. If you have any daughters/nieces/friends that would be interested in playing for an outstanding, friendly and easy going girls squad then please feel free to contact Mark Nicholson on 01892 539374 or e-mail him at marknicholson@consultant.com for more details.
Tunbridge Wells Foresters Girls Squad will be holding a recruitment day on Saturday 16th June, again ask Mark for more information.
