Sluggish Mustangs in the final furlong
13 Apr 2008
but they stay on course for Title!
Otford Youth 0 vs. TW Foresters Mustangs 4
Not having trained or played together in the league since we were away to Tonbridge Angels the Mustangs looked very rusty indeed. The previous meeting between the two teams, at Bayham, ended at 5 nil to the Mustangs with Sollie bagging all 5! No Sollie though this week!
This time around the going was tougher, not necessarily from the opposition but more from our own players. In the first half, despite a well worked and finished goal, we failed to keep the ball, pass and move and above all else relax. The first half offered opportunities but the Mustangs were always slow to the ball and slow to pass. The opposition were able to read us well.
In the second half the emphasis was on switching play from side to side in a bid to open up space ahead of ourselves. By and large this did happen although not immediately. In the first part of the second half Mustangs still failed to exploit space ahead of them by passing and moving. However the superior quality of the Mustangs mental and physical game would always shine through and sure enough a good opportunity presented itself and the ball duly ended up in the net. At 2-0 we were beginning to show signs of our intentions and we upped the game. Better cross field passing allowed greater space and within time a third goal from a solo effort was netted. A rasping shot from the left wing nearly knocked the goal over after thumping the upright! Late on another solo effort found space and the ball was neatly slotted home.
The goalie was called in to action on a couple of occasions and both times his safe hands ensured Mustangs maintained their momentum.
The performance was not a vintage one by Mustangs standards and while we may have felt the loss of Miller and Sollie their deputies played well and worked hard for the team. After all said and done a team effort is the one we would all want to see the most.
Well done boys!
