Mustangs take the TITLE!
Mustangs win title in style
A late 2pm kick off (at the request of the opposition) failed to dampen any enthusiasm the Mustangs had for wanting to win this game. A win or draw was all that would be needed to seal their first league title and in their debut season too.
Despite the pitch lacking width, the Mustangs started brightly enough and as predicted Oxted were a tough side. Early exchanges between the two were even enough and both sides fought hard to keep the ball from their goal. But the Mustangs had only started their game and sure enough the pressure began to mount. The first goal came from a well delivered corner onto the waiting head of an inbound Mustangs midfielder. The ball duly past the keeper and it to the waiting net 1-0! The second came soon after and was born out of dogged determination to keep on top of the play. Just before the half ended Liam suffered a nasty tackle and a waiting Luke came on for him.
In the second half Mustangs created more space from a passing game and with Luke now in his native right wing slot the balls were coming in thick and fast for the Oxted defence to deal with and for the Mustangs attack to work on. The 3rd goal was a well worked cross from that right wing passed in with great accuracy for a waiting Mustangs boot. 3-0! The 4th was yet another pass in from the right wing to a waiting Mustangs boot and Joshua’s hat trick, the 5th goal was a brilliantly worked ball from an Oxted attack the Mustangs worked the ball out and with no more than 4 passes the ball was in the net! Again all from the right wing and with perfect accuracy for the waiting Mustangs boot!
Considering injuries and ailments to the Mustangs team today’s performance was excellent. We were stuck on a tight, bumpy pitch and we were playing a very strong and useful team in Oxted. All credit must go to their Goalkeeper who despite being busy made some exceptional saves.
Well done to the Boys for winning this game. This was a great win under certain pressure. We have tied the title up with two matches spare and with a season’s goal tally of 99, next weeks home match against Redhill brings on further anticipation.
