Title hopes fall to a solid Southdown team
GIRLS UNDER 12s LEAGUE MATCH
At Bayham
SATURDAY 23rd FEBRUARY 2008
Tunbridge Wells Foresters 0
Southdown 4
To use a famous cliché this match really was a game of two halves. With a significantly reduced attacking force, Foresters started brightly enough against undoubtedly the best team the Under 12s league has to offer. The defence managed to soak up periods of pressure and then clear down the field to set us up with a couple of close chances.
With a slight slip of concentration for a moment, Southdown pounced on a loose ball on the left side of the Foresters box and slotted the ball into the net to take what was probably a goal against the run of play. Needless to say it meant that the half finished with Foresters needing to get back into the game.
The second half started slowly and there were few opportunities at either end. Then another loss of concentration over a 5 minute period saw two more goals sneaked in to the Foresters goal. We now had an impossible struggle for the last 5 minutes but the girls never gave up and never let their heads drop. Another lucky forth goal flattered Southdown as this game was clearly closer than the 4 – 0 scoreline suggests.
So a 3rd defeat in the Under 12 League now leaves us chasing second place, but considering we have only two actual Under 12s players leaves a season that the girls can already be proud of.
Player of the match, unquestionably went to Charlee Avis who was playing with a bad back, and made a fantastic contribution to stopping what could have been a larger defeat. Some excellent goalkeeping under pressure underlined the fact that Charlee has made the difference in the close matches this season.
The next Under 12s match is the Cup Semi-Final against Tonbridge – another tough test awaits.
