great opening win!

Foresters 3 vs. Battersea Youth 2

Our opening game of the season and the much awaited debut for Division B Tandridge Football.

A glorious sunny morning at Hawkenbury and a pitch to suit! All that was needed was a great performance. Sadly, we switched off in the first 15 minutes. Battersea were a good side but Foresters showed more intention and commitment but we somehow failed to convert our chances. Before long a high ball with an awkward bounce fell to a Battersea forward who simply headed the ball home. Their second goal was a gift from Foresters as we failed to play the ball to safety. At 2 – 0 down inspiration was required so Sollie was moved to right back and Miller was moved to the striker’s position. A carefully worked ball found Miller who took his chance superbly and slotted the ball home! Foresters refused to sit back and a long through ball slowed as it neared the Battersea keeper, however Miller never gave up the chase and through dogged determination beat the keeper to the ball and slotted the ball into the net with his left foot! 2-2! Now with their tails in the air Foresters pushed forward again and a lose ball found a receptive Liam who needed no second invite to ram the ball into the net! 3-2! The half time whistle blew.

The second half was again hotly contested but in fairness the defensive Forester line repelled any significant attempts by Battersea and while there were chances for Foresters to stretch the lead, the opportunities failed to yield results. The win was a fair reflection of the game and had Foresters early efforts gone in the score line could have been different.

This was a great win, especially as we were 2-0 down early on. As a team we played well, passed well and found better use of space. Dean Card had his debut Tandridge League game and put in a solid and careful performance. Kieran made some great saves, Joe worked tirelessly and managed to organise his defensive line. Josh, Luke, Liam and Sollie continued to work hard and play intelligent passing football. The key difference was our striker who was unbelievably clinical in his finishing and tenacious in his desire to win the ball.

Team: K Hounsell, J Brisley, S Cook, J Smith, L Eldridge, L Edwards, M Grice, D Card
