Mustangs Win League Shield 2nd Round

19 Jan 2009

Another fighting performance

Chipstead FC 0 – 1 Tunbridge Wells Foresters Mustangs

Thanks to Chipstead FC for hosting the match at short notice when our pitch at Hawkenbury was declared unfit for play.

Mustangs were slow starters, with Chipstead setting the early pace with some tidy passing and movement. A couple of fine saves from Jamie and strong defending from all kept us in the game. A thunderous shot from Joe midway through the half deserved to give us the lead but somehow the ball stayed out.

Second half was a much stronger performance from Mustangs who through excellent defending and distribution from the back and midfield found themselves piling the pressure on the Chipstead goal. With Callum, Jack, Liam and Alfie in numerous goal mouth scrambles surely a goal would come? But all seemed to be cleared and our shots saved by their keeper with whatever part of his body he could use (shades of England / Poland ’73). Would this turn out not to be our day as Chipstead broke and were denied again by Jamie.

A long shot from James went close but still no breakthrough.

Just when coach was seriously thinking about how to handle extra time and maybe penalties Mustangs won yet another corner. Another fine delivery from Alfie and this time the scramble resulted in the ball being netted albeit from a Chipstead player.

With only 2 minutes left on the clock, coach adopted a very defensive 3-3 formation which kept Chipstead at bay.

A well earned result against quality opposition.

Squad:

Jamie Threadgold (GK), Eddy Chambers (RB), Lee Phillips (RB), James Comben (LB) Capt., Alfie King (LM), Jack Beaney (CM), Liam Midmore (RM), Callum Seal (ST), Joe Wickham (ST)
