League Shield Agony for Mustangs

Mustangs Out of The Cup Losing The Penalty Shoot Out

Whyteleafe FC 3 – 2 (aet – Penalties) Tunbridge Wells Foresters Mustangs

Thanks to Whyteleafe FC for hosting the match when our pitch at Hawkenbury was again declared unfit for play.

The game was played on 3G Astro pitch, which our side had some difficulty adjusting to in the early stages, with the ball skimming across the surface.

Early exchanges were close but Mustangs clearly had to be at their best to compete against the table toppers from Division B. Typically, the players rose to the occasion and kept themselves in contention with strong defending and quick breaks from midfield.

0 – 0 at half time, Mustangs new Whyteleafe were rattled. Coach changed things around in the 2nd half following injuries to James and then Liam. Such is the spirit of the squad, the players kept up tremendous workrate, with Jack covering every blade of grass (plastic), Alfie always looking to beat his marker and play a pass and Callum ready to pounce on the slightest chance.

At full time, the score remained 0 – 0. Mustangs were beginning to tire and for most of extra time were penned back with the occasional break. Liam and James recovered to re enter the fray and be ready for penalties.

Almost inevitably, the dreaded penalty shoot out arrived. Coach briefed the players to make up their mind where to shoot and go for it!

Whyteleafe went first, a stunning save from Jamie kept the ball out.

Joe stepped up but their keeper made another good save – 0 – 0

Whyteleafe scored 1 – 0

James stepped up and thumped home, 1 – 1

Whyteleafe scored 2 – 1

Callum stepped up – again a fine save from their keeper 2 -1

Whyteleafe scored 3 – 1

Alfie stepped up and scored with a fine kick, 3 -2

Whyteleafe shot but another good save from Jamie gave a glimmer of hope.

Liam stepped up but alas it wasn’t to be.

Squad: Jamie Threadgold (GK), Willem Kliensmede (RB), James Comben (LB) , Alfie King (LM), Jack Beaney (CM), Liam Midmore, Capt. (RM), Callum Seal (ST), Joe Wickham (ST & RB)
