Magnificent 7?
New Beckenham Colts 2 – TWFC Mustangs 5
With a squad hit by injury, lack of availability and illness, Mustangs took 7 players up to the HSBC Sports Ground to play New Beckenham Colts. With a bright Spring morning our challenges were to handle a shuffled side and not run out of steam in the 2nd half.
The game could not have got off to a worst start with our opponents running through on goal – only to see their effort disallowed for a heavy challenge on our keeper. After a few minutes, Jamie was ready to carry on and showed real grit. However, few minutes later and the Colts were through again, this time making no mistake and going a deserved goal up. Mustangs seemed out of sorts and were letting players get in behind them.
The goal proved a wake up call and our midfield started to take control with excellent runs and passing from Alfie and Jack. Our defence tightened up and the Colts threat seemed to subside. Although Jamie was called upon to make several key saves. The equalizer came from Jack after 14 mins with a well taken goal inside the box. Our 2nd came after a good run and cross from Alfie finding James who flicked the ball in. Our 3rd came on the stroke of half time when Alfie hit a pile driver which the keeper couldn’t hold.
At half time we discussed the need to keep our passing going as legs would tire with no substitutes to call on.
Goal number 4 came after 2 mins when James shot home from inside the box. Mustangs were well in control but as the half wore on, legs were getting weary. On 14 minutes came another wonder goal from Joe when he hoofed the ball from just inside the Colts half where it dropped in just under the crossbar.
Almost immediately, Colts struck back with a well taken effort.
Colts were not finished, they pushed on as we tired – excellent defending from Joe and Eddy and saves from Jamie keeping them at bay. Jack and Alfie were also dynamos in midfield, causing havoc in the Colts ranks.
Although not on the score sheet today, Callum made some fine contributions, on another day he would have scored a couple.
Well done to all players today – with no substitutes and some positional changes we showed how much we want to win and how much the league means to us.
