Balgowan 1 – TWFC Mustangs 3
Mustangs welcomed Liam’s return from injury for our trip to Kent County Cricket Ground in Beckenham to play Balgowan. This week, coach was spoiled for choice with 10 players in the squad, always difficult to juggle the subs but all players made a contribution today.
A warm bright day and heavily sloping pitch meant Mustangs needed to use the ball well and look for passes. When the match started we again seemed slow off the mark with Balgowan beating us to the ball and getting players in behind our defence. Their early attacks were repelled, with Eddy making some key interceptions and good passes to midfield. Nerves were settled after 4 minutes when Alfie’s corner was headed in at the far post by Joe. With the advantage of playing downhill, Mustangs moved with pace and purpose and Callum added our 2nd after 8 minutes
Our tactics seemed fine as Balgowan clearly tired as the half went on – but despite good pressure we were not able to add to our lead.
2nd half was much like the first with the edge being with Mustangs – although on the break Balgowan were not to be dismissed. After 11 mins we failed to clear a corner and Balgowan scored a deserved goal and were back in the match. There then followed a sustained period of play where Mustangs passing and movement ripped through Balgowan. How more goals were not added I’ll never know! Our luck changed when the ball was pinging around in the Balgowan penalty area and in stepped Willam to slot home. His first for Mustangs this season.
All in, a good game with splendid performances from several players – Callum was strong up front and our shuffled midfield kept us in control. Some cheeky chips from James showed alternative ways of passing opponents! Eddy was alive to all dangers and made some key interceptions for us. Another good team effort and a big step towards our target of 35 points!
