Foresters end Selsdon's 100% League start to the season !
Tunbridge Wells Foresters ‘A’ 2 v Selsdon Rangers 2 @ Hilbert Rec (14th Oct 2007)
A bright sunny day at Hilbert drew out a very large support for our home match with Selsdon Rangers who had a 100% league record until today....
We were able to choose from a squad of 15 after the recent signings of Luke and Ryan. This enabled us to make frequent chances when required and give everyone a game.
Foresters started lively from the kick off and we winning the tackles and headers as asked in the team talk before the game, the first real chance falling to us after 10 minutes with Jack being through on the keeper who made a good stop to deny us taking the lead. At the other end a fine goal line clearance from Ryan stopped Selsdon going in front, the sides were evenly matched but Foresters had the upper hand. Ed Stockers fine corners were causing trouble for the visitors defence, and Christian headed narrowly over from a quality in swinging corner. Jorge then made a smart save from a Selsdon corner.
The deadlock was broken just before half time when following good work down the left from Christain, Ed Stocker headed powerfully in to put us in front. Jacks pace up front enabled him to create a chance with the keeper only just holding his shot. We could not hold the lead to half time and Selsdon equalised shortly afterwards.
Having the luxury of the subs enabled us to make changes and we were able to introduce Joe, Luke, Dan Cheek, and Harry at various times during the match all of whom made great contributions.
2 minutes into the second half Tom Beck had a long-range effort, which went narrowly wide. Jake making his debut as captain was winning every header in the middle of the park and showing his usual determination. Jack was unlucky not to score when he pressured the keeper from a back pass who kicked the ball straight at Jack but fortunately for the keeper the rebound landed back in his hands. Calum’s long throws were making life difficult for the visitors defence, and Shashi, Ryan and George were all solid at the back as usual.
Foresters then re took the lead when following nice work by Joe, Dan, and Jordan the ball finally arrived at Tom’s foot who was able to skilfully chip the keeper from well outside the penalty area. Selsdon then had a goal disallowed and they seem determined to equalise and were taking the game to Foresters. They created several chances with the useful number 14 shooting just over twice, and their persistence paid off then equalised with a chip over the keeper.
The match was now finally balanced with Jack rounding the keeper and Seldon defender making a desperate saving clearance, however at the other end Jorge made a good save to keep us in the match.
At the end of the day a draw was the right result between two very evenly matched teams.
Thanks to all the parents, grand parents, brothers, and sisters, and friends for their excellent turn out and support, and also to the young ref Jack who controlled at the game at times.
MOM Ryan on his debut for a fantastic all round performance.
