Westerham (4) v Foresters A (2) - League Shield 6th Jan 2008
BATTLING FORESTERS GO DOWN FIGHTING
After a break from football of over 4 weeks and the Christmas holidays our first trip of the New Year saw us travel to Westerham for a cup match.
Unfortunately Jordan broke his arm in the holidays and we were therefore missing this key player .All the players, supporters and everyone at Foresters wishes him a speedy recovery.
This made for some slight changes with Dan Cheek starting on the right wing and Jack on the left.
The match started brightly for us with the central midfield pair of Ryan and Jake not letting Westerham settle, and all the boys were showing great commitment and determination to win the tackles and headers.
Foresters then started to play some good passing football with Jack being switched up front and Christain to left midfield to try and stop the lively Westerham right-winger.
Following a Dan Cheek corner, which Westerham failed to clear the ball, came back to Dan who sent in a great cross, which was fired into the net by Christian to give us a deserved lead. We were now beginning to control the game with the defence of Ed, Sashi, George and Tom Beck dealing with everything Westerham had to offer.
The best goal of the match was then lashed home from 25 yards by Tom Beck to give a two nil lead. We also a great chance to make it three when a Tom free kick was headed off the line by one of the tall Westerham defenders.
Westerham were not creating that many clear-cut chances but when the attacker was clean through one on one with Jorge the keeper tipped the ball round the post. To my amazement the referee awarded a goal kick to us.
We needed to hold the lead to half time but sadly could not, when Westerham drilled a shot low into the corner. The goal coming some 5 minutes into at least 8 minutes of unexplained injury time.
The second half was a different story with Westerham being more direct down the middle and attacking in numbers. This was causing us problems and they then gained a deserved equaliser. We were forced to make changes to try and stop the attackers with
Luke introduced at left back and Sashi switching to right back.
The game was then changed following a poor & controversial decision by ref who awarded a corner to Westerham with the linesman flagging for a goal kick. This seemed to unsettle our defenders who did not properly clear the corner, and the Westerham attacker fired in a shot that Jorge done well to parry, but only to the feet of the Westerham player who had a simple tap in.
Westerham greater fitness levels and 4 subs was enabling them to take the game to us, and they make it four when following a shot that Jorge tipped onto the bar the ball, Luke and the ball both finally ending up bundled in the back of the net, not surprisingly no free kick was given and a goal was awarded.
At this stage I thought our heads would go down but in the last ten minutes we went hunting for a deserved third or even fourth goal .Calum held the ball up and feed Joe Warr on the wing who passed to Jack who’s shot was well held by the keeper
In summary all the boys showed a great of effort and determination which if we keep going can only mean moving up the league.
Thanks to all the supporters who travelled and Jakes Dad for being the linesman in very difficult conditions!
MOM - Sashi .For some great tackles and never say die attitude
