Budding Beckhams witness the Premier League

26 Apr 2006

Our Budding Beckham’s took a giant leap forward in their development with a very successful trip to see their first ever premiership game. The game featured Charlton vs. Portsmouth and it was a game in which Portsmouth really needed to win in order to bolster their recent run of form. Charlton on the other hand, needed a win to bring them back into a winning way after quite a few poor performances.

Our position within the stadium was directly on the goal line (and all goals were at this end!) and directly adjacent to the rather verbose Portsmouth supporters who seemed to have a song for every aspect of the games progress – and rather fortunately did not resort to many blue words – which would have course made the parents job just a hint tougher!

The Portsmouth fans and their excellent singing for their team had many of our children in awe and regretfully most of the children missed their goal in favour of watching so many people chant! But they did sing so nicely! Portsmouth opened the scoring just before half time with a well worked effort from their young Argentine star, D’Alessandro.

Charlton, after a much needed talking to by Head Coach Barry Pickett (not really) came out in the second half and put on a far better display. Their efforts were rewarded by Hughes and Bent and the game ended 2-1 to Charlton.

The journey to and from The Valley was exceptionally good and all the parents and children seemed to enjoy the day immensely. This was hopefully the first of many of these trips and our aim is to expose the children to all aspects of Football and the many ways in which it can be enjoyed.

The development squad would like to thank The Valley Express coach service, Charlton Athletic and of course those fine men behind the scenes who organised it all! Watch out early next season as we will aim to have a repeat performance to see Charlton play again!
