Tandridge League Cup Semi Final
Sunday saw the clubs two U8 Sunday teams go head to head in the semi final of the Tandridge League's Premier Cup Competition.
Bayham was packed, School bragging rights were at stake (Not to mention coach rivalry) and the atmosphere was electric. Everyone had been looking forward to the fixture since the draw had been published.
The game started slowly with both teams not wishing to over commit early on. Quartz kicking up hill in the first half started to slowly get their passing game together and only a great save by Charlie from Alfie's effort from outside the box prevented the visitors from taking the lead. Visage came back strongly pressing hard without troubling the Quartz keeper. The game ebbed and flowed for a while until Ben picked up the ball wide on the right and riffled an unstoppable shot into the top corner, keeper no chance. Within minutes Ben was free again on the right, this time taking the wrong option, shooting instead of passing the ball to Alfie who was unmarked in the penalty box. Minutes latter Ben made up for this error by squeezing the ball home with his left foot. Visage pressed for to get hold of the game before half time, but the solid work in midfield by Josh meant they struggled for a foot hold in the game. On the occasions Visage managed to get through the midfield, Luca ( Booby Moore like) snuffed out any danger.
Second half, kicking down the hill. Ben struggling with a thigh injury went in goal, this saw our ace poacher Toby go up front. Within minutes Toby slotted home from close range. This was quickly followed by another from Toby. Visage rallied and pressed and on a couple of occasions went very close from corners. It was from a quick throw from a Visage corner that Alfie found himself flying down the wing skinning the defender and crossing perfectly for Toby to complete his hatrick. Alfie soon powered through midfield and with only the keeper to beat opted for power over placement and Charlie pulled off another fantastic save. After another dominant display in midfield Josh burst through and calmly slotted the ball past a despondent Charlie in goal. Once again Visage showed they never say die attitude which has served them well all season, and for the first time in the match Luca found himself out of position, with Freddie bearing down on goal only a cruel bounce prevented him from testing the goalie.
Feeling a little deflated, Visage sat back and with Quartz sensing the job was done the game settled down to an easy pace until the final whistle was blown. Quartz progress into the cup final on Saturday the 9th at Chipsted against Junior Elite.
While it was a disappointing result for Visage, they should be congratulated on an extremely good season. They have been playing the top teams all season and performing really well.
Quartz have also had a cracking season, starting slowly finding it difficult to adapt to the physical nature of the new Sunday League, they have steadily grown in both confidence and resolve and are finally reaping the rewards of all their effort. Sunday was only the second clean sheet we have kept all season, Luca was our defender in both games and was outstanding in both. With Josh and Alfie both supporting from midfield while providing the attacking thrusts for Ben and Toby to score the goals. Wilfie and Milo will be back for the final, and next season we will see the introduction of Noah stepping up from the Saturday league and Daniel joining us as our new goal keeper.
