Foresters Ladies hosted last year runners up Gillingham Development Ladies in the 1st round of the Kent Cup and narrowly lost out by a late goal.

Gillingham started the game quickly and only after a couple of minutes Foresters keeper Sam Wright was forced to parry a shot low down to her left from the oncoming opposing winger.

It wasn’t long before Foresters started getting on the ball and started to cause problems of their own. Their first chance came to Nia Lewis who was found with a ball over the top which surprised the Gillingham backline but unfortunately the shot was straight at the keeper.
With the half coming to a close, chances were few and far in between as Foresters kept a good defensive shape and both teams went into the break level.

Once again Gillingham started the restart on the front foot but it was Foresters who opened the scoring. In form Nia Lewis latched onto a loose ball that caught the Gillingham defenders on the back foot and she dispatched the ball first time into the top right-hand corner.
It wasn’t long after that Foresters should have really found themselves another goal to the good but were denied by the woodwork. The referee had blown up for a foul and Kelly Moran hit a free kick from 25 yards out that beat the keeper but came of the underside of the crossbar.

Foresters started to tire and Gillingham found themselves back in the game. A through ball was played behind the Foresters left back who had slipped which allowed the opposing winger to latch on and fire a shot past the keeper into the bottom right corner.

With the game coming to a close, Foresters tired to hold out but it was Gillingham who got the winner. A shot was parried away by the Foresters keeper but the ball was put into the path of the opposition forward who slotted the ball away from just a few yards.

Foresters should feel proud of their performance and matched the opposition for most of the game but now turn their focus to the FA Cup tie vs Phoenix Sports on Sunday 22nd September 2019.

Team: Sam Wright, Courtney Smith, Alex Weston, Sam Burton, Hollie Rabbit, Ellie Hyner, Kelly Moran, Becky Janes, Nia Lewis, Lauryn Underhill, Rona Wignall – Subs: Sara Walker, Shannon Hyner, Karli Povey, Charlotte Coulter.
